Invisible time as the memory fades

I don't write poems often, but here's an old one I found about the pains and process of getting over a lost love
Posted on : 01-10-05

Invisible hands push me on my way
Invisible mind keeps the thoughts at bay
Invisible sands from the beach where we played
Invisible time as the memory fades

Invisible mask as I swear out a smile
Invisible clothes as I feel out of style
Invisible tasks lay before me in trial
Invisible blows as I travel a mile

And sometimes all it takes is a suggestion
A drive to walk a certain path someday
A quick pain to my heart makes me question
The invisible things you left along the way

Invisible knives left hanging in air
Invisible daggers stealth without glare
Invisible pinpricks will bite me and flare
Invisible presents you somehow left there

And I really don’t think you meant to do it
Leaving sharpness hanging
Hiding waiting for me
But sometimes just a sound or place or thought will bite me
As I pass a memory of
sometime long ago
and remember

I wish I had a better suit of armor
I wish that I could stave off this offensive
I wish I knew an easy way to tell her
What her memories are doing to my senses

But these traps remain hidden to me
Showing their faces then running and hiding again
And I know I will fall upon another someday
And I hope that with each one that sticks me
It will be the last
And my heart will take it out of circulation
And bury it down deep and away
Where your memory cannot find it
And hide it from me again

Sometimes when I wake up after dreaming of you
It’s like waking up on bed full of nails
And I arise as quickly as I can
As safely as I can
Without letting any blood fall upon the bed
And then it’s gone, and I realize it was just a dream
And you hadn’t just told me you missed me
And you hadn’t just told me you loved me
And you hadn’t just jumped me and hugged me and kissed me.
And I am sad for moment

But then I go about my day with
Invisible fire inside memories of you
Invisible desire for the heat
Invisible pinch as the thought invades
Invisible time as the memory fades
